His name is Samuel Hübinette and given that he is of Scandinavian decent, it is no surprise that Samuel likes to drive sideways. But rather than all out race, Samuel emjoys that crazy new fashion known to Gen X'ers as drift. However, unlike many others, Mr Hübinette has earned the nickname 'The Crazy Swede' by drifting that all out moustache and testicles beast, the Dodge Viper.
1979 - 8 years old
At this early age, Samuel taught himself how to drift with his father’s diesel Mercedes. He went outside his hometown, Jokkmokk in Sweden on a frozen lake called Skabrammojve and did his first drift, and that’s where it all started.
1981 - 10 years old
Samuel bought his first dirt bike, a Suzuki 50cc. From this point on, you could always find him at the track.
1982 - 11 years old
After tiring from the slow speed of the 50cc, Samuel upgraded to a Suzuki 80cc.
1983 - 12 years old
Samuel continued to drive rally with his father’s Mercedes on gravel roads in the summer and on ice in the winter.
1985 - 14 years old
Samuel decided to drive his dirt bike through the school campus. Not so popular among the staff at school, he did become popular among his peers. And, this just might be the reason many now call him “The Crazy Swede.” He also upgraded, once again, to a Suzuki 250cc.
1987 - 16 years old
Barely having his racing license, he started racing a Volvo 142 out at the track.
1989 - 18 years old
Samuel was finally able to get his drivers license in Sweden, after already 10 years of driving. One has to be 18 years old to take the test and also attend a skid pad class in Sweden. Obviously, this class was no problem for Samuel. And, since he loves speed on wheels, he bought his first street bike as well as a car.
1990 - 19 years old
This year he decided to change it up a bit and entered the truck driving business. He drove a 60-ton semi truck from the Arctic Circle in Sweden down to Russia and Rumania.
1991 - 20 years old
Samuel entered the army as a fire fighter at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. This experience was great for him to learn about first aid and working under high pressure.
1992 - 21 years old
Samuel finally got his first dream job as a test driver for Volvo Car Corporation at their winter facility above the Arctic Circle in Sweden. This was a dream come true to drive eight hours a day and get paid for it! He also got his first stunt job in a Volvo TV commercial and continued shooting commercials with Volvo for several years.
1995 - 24 years old
A new opportunity arose and Samuel became a test driver at the Volvo proving ground outside Gothenburg. He continued to drive eight hours a day.
1996 - 25 years old
At this point, Samuel starte to race touring cars with a team at Volvo. This year he also got his motorcycle racing license, moving his crazy riding from the streets to the racetracks.
1998 - 27 years old
Looking for a new adventure, Samuel took a year off from Volvo and moved to southern California. During this year he got the opportunity to use his skills with Skip Barber Racing School.
2001 - 30 years old
He was one of the few to win a “Green Card” and immediately moved back to southern California where he worked for different driving schools as an instructor. Just after his move, 9/11 happened and business went down in the driving industry. To make a living he became a car broker, buying and selling cars at wholesale auto auctions. He was determined not to give in and move back to Sweden, even if he sometimes had to live on his savings.
2003 - 32 years old
In June, he entered the first D1 drivers search in California at Irwindale Speedway. Samuel and two friends, Rich Rutherford and Nick Kunewalder, rented a Nissan 350Z and Samuel ended up qualifying first among 52 other drivers (don’t tell Hertz).
2004 - 33 years old
This was the first D1 Grand Prix (with points in the
States) at Irwindale Speedway in February. The
best drifters from Japan and the US attended.
Samuel ended up placing tenth and was the best
US drifter. Unbeknownst to him, Mopar was at this
race to hopefully find a future driver for their drift
team. On April Fool’s Day he signed a contract with Mopar. He was in the midst of almost signing a contract with GM to be second driver with Rhys Millen, but he could not pass up Mopar’s generous offer to become their premier drifter. He had three out of four victories and became the Inaugural Formula D Champion in the Unites States for 2004.
2005 - 34 years old
After finishing 2nd place overall in the FormulaD series, six victories out of six in the Viper Racing League, several commercials, stunt driving and stunt driving for Fast and Furious 3… Samuel continues to use his driving gifts and talents whenever he can. He keeps his drifting skills up to date as well as keeping his fans happy by marketing his shoe line and clothing line. He is one of a kind!
2006 was a great year! I got to be a part of Fast and the Furious- Tokyo drift as a stunt driver. I got engaged with my longtime girlfriend Stina. I got sworn in as an American Citizen. I took my 2nd championship in the Formula Drift series and I ended the year with my wedding! Wow, what a year…
With a new car a Charger SRT8, Samuel and his team Nuformz struggles the season to make it competitive. With great effort from Team Nuformz and Samuel, he captures a 5th place in the FormulaD Championship.
